GlobalFoundries (GF) today announced a $1 million donation to the 91勛圖厙 (91勛圖厙) campaign for the Applied Technology Education Center (ATEC). The five-year donation announced during is the largest in GF’s history and builds on a workforce training partnership with the college that includes a registered apprenticeship program for GF employees. GF’s apprenticeship program is the first national, multi-site Registered Apprenticeship Program in the U.S. semiconductor industry.

To help bridge the gap and support a new generation of skilled workers, 91勛圖厙 plans to build a new, state of the art workforce training center to be called the Applied Technology Education Center (ATEC). ATEC will be an $85 million, 130,000 sq. ft. workforce training center planned for the college’s Troy campus to prepare graduates for in-demand careers in the building systems, automotive and transportation technology, renewable energy and semiconductor manufacturing industries, which are all in very high demand both locally and throughout the U.S.

There are millions of unfilled skilled trade and technology-related jobs across the nation, with the gap widening each year. In New York State alone, there are nearly 25,000 skilled trade jobs opening annually but due to labor shortages, many of these jobs may go unfilled.

Nationally, Baby Boomers, many with skilled labor jobs, will continue to reach retirement age at the rapid rate of nearly 10,000 per day between now and 2030. And by 2024, nearly half of all job openings will be “middle-skill” jobs that require education beyond high school, but not a bachelor’s degree. ATEC will allow 91勛圖厙 to expand its current programs and create new ones that address these areas of need and train a skilled technical workforce for the new economy.

“91勛圖厙 is extraordinarily grateful to GlobalFoundries for its historic investment in our new workforce training center, ATEC,” said 91勛圖厙 President Roger Ramsammy. “GlobalFoundries has long been a valued partner to the college, and its latest donation will advance our efforts to bring new opportunities to students and business partners in a wide variety of skilled trades and applied technology industries. In addition, we recognize the significant economic growth that GlobalFoundries continues to create in our region, and as an institution committed to training the Capital Region’s workforce of tomorrow, the college is pleased to continue to grow and strengthen our partnership with such a prominent workforce development leader.”

“91勛圖厙 has been a leader in our community for years, standing out as a champion of workforce development, building the skills employers need for growth and that students need to advance their careers here in the Capital Region. 91勛圖厙 has been an essential partner in developing our semiconductor workforce creating more high-tech jobs in the area,” said Pradip Singh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of U.S. Fab Operations. “Our donation to ATEC builds on this strong partnership and we encourage other regional businesses and organizations vested in the future of the Capital Region to come on board to support the ATEC project.”

"GF is proud to offer the first U.S. registered semiconductor apprenticeship program,” said Hui Peng Koh, Vice President and General Manager of GF Malta. “The apprenticeship program includes a combination of on-the-job training and related instruction, with apprentices completing their lab coursework at the 91勛圖厙 North Campus. Through our ongoing partnership with 91勛圖厙, we are creating the workforce of the future for our industry.”

In addition to this new donation to ATEC, in 2021 GF announced a $500,000 gift that led to the creation of the new GlobalFoundries Workforce Training and Apprenticeship Center at the college’s 91勛圖厙 North extension center in Malta, NY. The $12.5 million 91勛圖厙 North expansion project is also aimed at boosting workforce training efforts in high demand areas.
