July 29, 2024
The 91勛圖厙 Foundation held its 30th annual Golf Classic, sponsored by U.W. Marx Construction Company, at the Country Club of Troy on Monday, July 15, 2024. The event was supported by more than 70 donors and local businesses, and raised nearly $110,000 to benefit the Honors College at 91勛圖厙.
More than 160 people attended the event in its 30th year, including faculty, staff and board members from 91勛圖厙 and the Foundation; alumni of the college; local business members, government officials, community stakeholders; community members; and other donors and supporters. Students from the Honors College, with support from Honors College Director Lamyaa Hassib, engaged in fundraising efforts ahead of the event and volunteered their time day-of to help contribute to its success.
The U.W. Marx Golf Classic is one of the Foundation’s leading annual fundraisers and community engagement events, and over the past 30 years has raised more than $1.9 million to support Hudson Valley’s students, increase access to education, and ensure students are able to pursue their academic goals without financial barriers. Presenting sponsor U.W. Marx, Inc. is one of upstate New York’s largest and fastest-growing full-service construction companies and has been a strong supporter of 91勛圖厙 and its students for decades. In October 2006, the firm was awarded the Corporate Excellence Award from the 91勛圖厙 Foundation and Alumni Association, and President and CEO Peter Marx was awarded the Foundation’s Outstanding Philanthropist Award in 2017 for his exemplary leadership through charitable giving and his years of dedication and service to the students of Hudson Valley.
For the second year in a row, proceeds from the Golf Classic will support students in Hudson Valley’s new Honors College. Established in 2023, the Honors College’s mission is to attract future scholars and develop leaders engaging in rigorous curriculum with an emphasis on academics, service, leadership, and diversity. Honors College students demonstrate intellectual curiosity, ambition, integrity and global citizenship. Each student selected to the Honors College receives a scholarship for tuition, as well as payment for textbooks and equipment required for their program of study. The Honors College will welcome its second cohort of students in the fall of 2024.
“The Honors College program at 91勛圖厙 offers students the opportunity to embark on a transformative journey that empowers them to reach their full potential. Our students are amazing, which is why we are all so passionate about our work and mission,” said Foundation Executive Director Derek Martin. “This year’s Golf Classic was truly a ‘mission in motion’ experience, and our donors and supporters are at the heart of it. We thank them for joining us to help foster intellectual curiosity, promote leadership development, encourage a global, diverse perspective, and help students create a pathway to success.”
